Behind the brand: A Note from our Founder
The 8mm Magician
When I was 11, I “borrowed” my father’s 8mm film camera. I spent hours filming a friend waving his hands at a vase, stopping and starting the tape to make the object “vanish.” To me, it was pure magic. To my father, it was a ruined, expensive film. But at that moment, I knew it: I wanted to create, not just consume.
The Trap of Significance
Fast forward a decade. I was studying Physics. Why? Because it sounded “significant.” My uncle was a respected professor, my parents were proud, and society told me this was the path to success. But I was miserable. I was ignoring a psychological test that told me I should be an artist, choosing instead to live up to everyone’s expectations but my own. I traded my intuition for a version of success that didn’t belong to me.
The ‘Lost Days’
I eventually found myself in a career that is supposed to be the holy grail of modern times. I had the car, the house, and the upward trajectory. But I felt like a marathon runner on a treadmill: moving fast, but going nowhere.
The days crawled by, yet the years vanished. I was an elastic band stretched so far I had forgotten my original shape. I was living a life that looked great on paper, but felt empty in practice.
Finding the Compass
The spark returned when I “borrowed” (and eventually kept) my wife’s SLR camera. Suddenly, I was that 11-year-old kid again, losing track of time and finding purpose. I realized that as children, we never dream of mortgages or judicious paychecks—we dream of magic, of freedom, and of being true to ourselves.
Why Dikkopf?
I founded Dikkopf for anyone who feels they are running on a treadmill that isn’t theirs. For the dreamers, the professionals, and the creatives who feel that society’s “ideal path” is missing a soul.
Dikkopf is about the courage to listen to that stubborn inner voice again. We don’t do mass production or fake inspiration. We make gear for the rebels, the outsiders, and those who—like me—decided to finally let go of the expectations of others and become who they really are.
